Abstract:
Attaining net zero emissions is a vital component in addressing climate change and promoting sustainable economies. Net zero refers to a scenario where the amount of greenhouse gases emitted is equal to the amount removed from the atmosphere. Despite the advancements made through the Paris Agreement and subsequent COP meetings, the world is still far from achieving this objective as emissions continue to rise due to various human activities, including the unrestrained consumption of fossil fuels. In this talk, we examine the proposed solutions and progress along this path to mitigate this pressing challenge, including the implementation of circular carbon economy, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and hydrogen economy.

About the Speaker
Hussein Hoteit is Associate Professor in Reservoir Engineering and Program Chair of Energy Resources and Petroleum Engineering program at KAUST. Prof. Hoteit's current research includes improved oil recovery, geological CO2 storage, and reservoir simulation. Before joining KAUST, Prof. Hoteit worked for ConocoPhillips and Chevron Companies for about 12 years, where he conducted projects related to chemical- enhanced oil recovery (EOR), CO2-EOR, steam flood, and others.
