Sustainability Seminar Series: Transforming Desert Soils for Greening, Food Security, and Carbon Capture

Join us for the Fall 2026 Sustainability Seminar Series featuring Prof. Himanshu Mishra.
This seminar will explore how desert soils can be transformed to support plant growth, food security, and long-term carbon capture. Prof. Mishra will present research on Carbosoil™, a KAUST-developed engineered biochar produced from organic waste such as date palm residues and animal manure.
The seminar will examine how Carbosoil™ improves water and nutrient retention in sandy, alkaline soils, supports plant growth, and contributes to long-term carbon storage. Drawing on multiyear field trials in Saudi Arabia, Prof. Mishra will also discuss why successful greening requires careful carbon accounting, particularly when irrigation and fertilization emissions are considered.
