Moving Forward!

Dear sustainability family,

I hope you are having a sustainably well week. There are so many exciting opportunities for you to make a positive impact!

1. The 3 fun contests from the week of awareness
We had an amazing week full of insights on food sustainability. If you did not have a chance to join; no worries, you still can participate in any of the three contests and win great prizes. Drive a little change by sharing this with your friends. To participate, send your work to ssquare@kaust.edu.sa. The deadline for all competition entries is September 30.

2. Sustainability LibGuid with the KAUST library
S Square collaborated with the KAUST library to create a LibGuid on sustainability.  You can access the unpublished version here. However, we still need to finalize the process by following up with the library team. If you are interested in taking part, please let me know, and I will put you in the loop.

3. Sustainability Hub at WEP - institutional collaboration
Would you like to lead the establishment of Sustainability Hub at WEP with Ana Margarida, the head of sustainability at KAUST? Do you have ideas to share for WEP 2021 on Connectivity in which many sustainable development goals intersect? The aim is to build something that will be (re)used every year.

4. Educational campaign with Edama on composting organic waste

You may have heard of establishing the first composting facility at KAUST! Edama Organic Solutions, an innovative organic waste recycling startup founded right here at KAUST in 2017, is the first company of its kind in Saudi, and it sits poised to revolutionize the way organic waste is managed in the Kingdom. Change is coming but it requires an appealing educational campaign. Contact me to be part of the drive!

5. Visual tour of the recycling center
Tours are so effective in raising awareness and engaging people in making better lifestyle choices. Because of COVID-19, we, unfortunately, stopped our physical touring activities around KAUST facilities. Yet, we still can do it virtually. Do you want to get engaged in the preparation process, please contact natalia.odnoletkova@kaust.edu.sa.

6.Green Nudges initiative

Green nudges is an effective behavioral change mechanism to encourage institutions and people to take that first step in their sustainability journey.

The Little Book of Green Nudges (see the press release) was launched on September 1st byUnited Nations Environment Programme, GRID-Arendal and the Behavioural Insights Team (BIT) at the World Academic Summit. Check out the launch video and see the full publication here.

Let's do it for KAUST!

If you are interested in taking a lead or in bing a student representative in any of the mentioned initiatives, please let me know!

Yours sincerely,
Eman M. Alhajji
