Eid Mubarak! Wish you all a very happy and peaceful holiday. (I think I am the first one to send holiday wishes this early ­ƒñ¬; well, it is my only chance ­ƒÿà). The Spring semester is coming to an end. I hope that our student members have a joyful learning journey with their final exams and a charming summer. 

Every month brings us many exciting opportunities to make a positive impact and to leverage the power of acting collectively to make our world a better place.

1. Creat & Lead your Own Initiative

We at S Square always strive to be a dynamic, open, transparent and respectful society so that we drive change in the most effective way. We always welcome new ideas and initiatives. Always remember that our platform is aligned with the UN 17 goals of sustainable development. You can target any topic and take an action around it. Just let us know how we can support you!



2. Sustain Movies in its New Screening Venue 



Last year, we were pleased to enjoy regular sustainability movie nights organized by Liubov Gapa in one of the campus classrooms. We now would like to offer documentaries in a  more sustainable and accessible way to our entire community members. I am excited to share with you that the Discovery Cinema team is keen to operate the movie screenings. We need you to help us to coordinate efforts between us, graduate affairs and the head of KAUST sustainability to secure a list of movies for public screening. If you are interested in this role, please email me back. 

3. Support Gender Equality & Wellness Beyond KAUST Boarders with Kafo


S Square & Magpies Women's Football Club got approval to collaborate with a local women's soccor team called Kafo in Jeddah for a great cause. Kafo is participating in a national tournament organized by the Saudi Sport For All Federation to get into the global goals world cup. In this cup, each team champions one of the SDGs, and is ranked by the action taken for their Goal on and off the field. The teams are scored in four distinct categories: Action, Crowd, Style and Football. Those awarded not only win a tournament. They amplify their calls to action and create impact, locally and globally.  Team Kafo plays for Gender Equality, Goal 5. They aspire to contribute to promoting women's empowerment and spread awareness among girls and all members of society about the potential and competence of women. We are in the proposal phase of our engagement. If you would like to take action on this initiative, please let me know!

4. Advocate for World Environmental Day on June 5th

June 5th marks World Environmental Day with the theme Ecosystem Restoration. Be our representative and meet with other departments at KAUST to generate creative ideas that we can act on. Together we can be #GenerationRestoration. If interested, please email me ASAP. 

5. Apply for the Middle East Mediterranean Summer Summit 2021


In 2018, the USI (University of Italian-speaking Switzerland) launched the Middle East Mediterranean (MEM) Summer Summit, with the support of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. This year’s summit is scheduled to take place from 21 to 28 August 2020 in Lugano, Switzerland. It specifically targets young change-makers from the Middle East Mediterranean or with a strong interest in the region. Its aim is to foster social and intellectual exchanges on an array of topics that touch both shores of the Mediterranean basin. You will find all the necessary information, such as the application deadline and the required documents, on the website or the document here.

6. Join the Vegan Supper Club



The vegan supper club will continue meeting for May on Saturdays at 7:00 pm. Everyone is welcome to join! The objective is to create a welcoming atmosphere to discuss sustainability issues with friends while eating eco-friendly food!
