G20 Summit

We attended the G20 workshop on Circular Carbon Economy (CCE) on 1-2 March, 2020. CCE is a signature priority of the Saudi Presidency, and it is a comprehensive approach for managing emissions across sectors and geographies.

Ph. D. candidates Natalia and Eman had the honor of meeting Mr. William McDonough, famous designer, architect and one of the fathers of the circular economy and circular carbon economy concepts, like cradle-to-cradle design.

Miliausha Petrova's research focusses on the 'remove' part of CCE. She studies the opportunities for carbon sequestration and storage in the kingdom from the geological perspective.

Synthesizing new materials is the basis for making the cycle of 4Rs a complete one. Eman is working towards making the transition from fossil fuels burning economy into an economy based on renewables feasible by innovating new carbon materials for energy storage.

Natalia studies climate change in Saudi Arabia and it's implications on various sectors of the economy, in particular energy sector. Implementation of climate change adaptation policies may significantly lower the energy intensity of GDP in the kingdom, hence decrease emissions in line with the 'reduce' concept of CCE.

Prof. Mani was part of the delegates on Circular Carbon Economy representing KAUST in the G20 summit meeting.
